    hallo allerseits!

iMac G4/800 running with Mac OS X 10.2.8 NEC Drive is bootable. (from CD)
I'm using Toast 6.0 Titanium. Works great!!!
The NEC Drive is shown in System-profiler correctly.
The drive is not recognized by
    iTunes/iPhoto/Finder-Burning!!

Mike Comments: Since you're running 10.2.8, try Patchburn 1.1 for 10.2.x (Patchburn II is for 10.3.x). Patchburn 1.1 is linked in the FAQ's CDROM/CDR section. (download is mirrored on the macwelt german site I believe.)

Lüppt also mit Toast - für iTunes/iDVD etc. ist Patchburn II nötig - Panther-Version:

    Patchburn 1.1 für OS X 10.2.4 - 10.2.8:
    http://www.macwelt.de/public/PatchBurn/PatchBurn1.1en.sit

Reader Comments: Thanks to Patchburn II the drive works. Since I do not have a DVD R/RW nor CDRW, I could not test this capability, however it works wonders with CDR and works with iTunes.

I have tried to boot (from CD) by holding "C" no good, nor will it startup if selected as a startup drive through system. I am running 10.3.2 rock solid. Mac B&W with two hard disks 10 and 80 gig. the 80 gig has 12 partitions runing FWB HDTK 4.5.2. This setup has really help the corruption problems that I had earlier with this drive. (rev 1 B&W G3 I assume which often had this issue with non-apple shipped drives. Like intech's drivers, FWB also reduced the driver speed mode to address the corruption issue as i remember. (noted in an article in early 1999 at the main site/systems page.)-Mike)
So the only question left is how to get it to be recognized for startup.

Mike Comments: Usually only a drive firmware change/update can (may or may not) help with booting from CD. (I'm assuming the drive is set to master and you also tried the option key at boot. Also be patient, some drives may take several minutes to boot from CD, but this one may not).
No Mac flashers for this drive as far as I know - so if there was a later NEC firmware update for this drive model it would require using a PC to flash it.

Reader Comments: Just recently bought a QPS Que DVD 2i DVD+/-RW Firewire & USB2 external drive.

Toast 6.0.1 Titanium works flawlessly, with all types of media. (6.0.3 is latest version released a week or two ago)

Retrospect 5.1 backs up to DVD+RW media now with the latest 11/03 driver update, where it would only back up to CD-R before. I have not tried DVD-R.

OS X 10.3.1 does not burn to this drive. iTunes doesn't either.

Reader Comments: I just want to report that i found it to be impossible to get this thing working at all in my G3. I replaced the original cd-rom drive with the NEC-1300A drive. The power goes of course but the system doesn't detect the drive. Also if i eject a Zipdisk from the built-in Zipdrive the tray from the DVD also pops out. I've been unsuccesfull finding any usable software or drivers to get the thing going. Is it at all compatible with my system?

Mike Comments: Did you set the NEC drive to Master? (the ZIP drive is a slave setting normally - the CD drive should be set to Master as noted in my illustrated install guide). Look at the jumpers on the drive - set them to master if they are not already set that way. I suspect they are not from the comments.

Keep in mind this drive will not have itunes burn support (and probably not discburner support either) - you'll need Toast (or other mac burning software) to use the drive.

You can search for other reports on this drive (even limit searches to B&W G3 owner reports) but not sure there will be any from OS 9 users (most are running OS X now).

Drive is Bootable, works great with Toast 5.2.1 but is a little sensitiv to the inserted recordable DVD media type (Firmware V 1.05, actual V 1.08).

If you have access to a Windows PC it's possible to upgrade the firmware to V 1.08 which adds support for a lot more media types than V 1.05.

First the drive wasn't recognized by iTunes/iPhoto/Finder but then I found a 'patchtool' on the ReadersCD of the recent 'MacWelt' magazin. Its name is Patchburn and it is available in german and english on the MacWelt download page (www.macwelt.de; search for 'Patchburn'). (Note - PatchBurn was noted last month in the main site news. English and German version download links for PatchBurn 1.1 are in the FAQ's CDROM/CDR section. The author has included English instructions now after a reader translated the german docs last month.-Mike)

First an existing driver must be patched to the corresponding Vendor, the Tool recognizes the attached Burner automatically. Then the same driver must be patched to the Model. Those steps can be done by some mouseclicks (3 at total in this case ;-) ).

After hacking the driver with this tool and a reboot iTunes, iPhoto and Finder burning support was 'just' there. I didn't test iDVD, because I don't own a copy, but I'm pretty shure that this Application will support the drive too.

Mike Comments: Did you have to remove the front drive tray edge to clear the MDD case opening? (typical with most drives - either trimming the upper corners of the tray edge or removing it to clear the MDD rounded CD bay openings)

Itunes doesn't find any DVD driver. Does it required TOAST 5.2 ?
the unit is only reading, no burning!

Mike Comments: Toast5 works with most drives withouth any modified plugin files (which are needed for iTunes burn support). IDVD requires an internal drive and won't burn with DVD+R/+RW discs - but Toast5 I would have thought should have allowed burning with it.

Is the drive is set to master? (normal jumper setting for FW cases)
If the case, drive and cable are good - I'd write Roxio (Toast) tech support to see if they have any suggestions.
